Exodus 31

Bezalel and Oholiab

Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent— the table and its articles, the pure gold lampstand and all its accessories, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, the basin with its stand— 10 and also the woven garments, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when they serve as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them just as I commanded you.”

The Sabbath

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, 13 “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.

14 “‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. 15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant.17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”

18 When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

Exodus 31

God asks us to join him in life, to experience all that he has for us. When he wants you to do something he will give you instructions, materials and even the skilled workers to help you achieve His purpose for the kingdom. So when the Lord gave Moses instructions on Mount Sinai he said I’m going to give you two skilled craftsmen so that they will make the tent and fill it for you. Bezalel will be your foreman and Oholiah Will be the second in charge. They will help make this tent and fill it with ornate wood pieces with gold, silver and precious stones. We can’t do everything, we need helpers, specialized craftsman and people with the heart of God to help complete Gods purpose for the church. But remember God is also the God of society. No job should be considered boring or humdrum if God has intended you for it, or ordained you for it.

I read that 80% of us are not happy with our jobs. 80%! That’s a lot. Maybe it’s because we are not where God intended us to be? From the beginning he has plans for us he has given us special gifts to use. Whether it be a plumber, a housewife, an engineer, a policeman etc. he gives us special gifts, skills and certain personalities and he wants us to use them. To follow our heart and what he has intended for us. But sometimes we’re reluctant to follow our heart for one reason or another and we end up someplace else, unhappy, miserable not wanting to face the day. It’s so important to follow our heart when choosing careers. If you’re in a different career and have a calling on your heart used that calling to help your church community and fulfill God‘s purpose for you.

Constructing this ornate tent and making it movable was a process and hard work so God commands them to honor the Sabbath so they could rest and worship. In this crazy world we live in hardly anyone takes a complete day off anymore. It’s a struggle to accomplish everything and to take a day … sometimes it seems impossible. Although we are not bound by the Sabbath through the new covenant ( Romans 14:5; Colossians 2:16–17) the principle is still important. Mentally and physically we need it! That’s why God places people around you: your family, community, church family, people at work… to help you accomplish what you need so that you can take a day. Welcome those people in your life, you don’t need to do it all yourself! (note to self🙄)

So at the end of this conversation on Mount Sinai God gives Moses the two stone tablets with the agreement on them written by the finger of God. Written in stone so it cannot be erased, permanent directions, The 10 Commandments. When we say that something is written in stone we mean it cannot be changed. These tablets will be placed in the Ark of the Testimony, a.k.a. Ark of the Covenant , along with Aaron‘s rod and a jar of manna.

What special abilities and gifts do you have?
Are you using that gift not only in your day-to-day routine but to serve the church and glorify God.
