Purification After Childbirth
12 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3 On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.
6 “‘When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering.[a] 7 He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.
“‘These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl.8 But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”
These directions were given so that people would understand the importance of childbirth. The Bible is clear that having a child is a time to celebrate it tells us to be fruitful and multiply. Sexuality within a marriage is a good thing. Going before God after childbirth, to make you clean again, was about bringing another sinner into the world and atoning for the sinner you just delivered. The length of time to be separated was given so that the mom could have time with her new child to bond and nurture it. The importance of that bonding time and to be separated from everyone so you can heal from the delivery. Even today it is important.
All through the Bible we see God deal with blood issues and healing. In Leviticus 15 we will see it again. Pastor John told us this morning the bottom line is: God is Holy and anything that deals with sin has to be dealt with. When we need healing we need to draw closer to him. Take our eyes off of ourselves and focus on Jesus. Seek to get as close as possible to him. When you do this his peace will fill you and his love will rub off on us. More of him and less of me.
In Mark 5:25-34 We see the example from a woman who is Hemorrhaging for 12 years. 12 years! She just heard about Jesus and she said I have to seek him out and go find him. When it’s God‘s will and you seek him out… he can and will heal you. This woman pressing her way through the crowd just trying to sneak in a small touch of His robe … expectant for healing. How much faith she had in Jesus’ healing touch.
All of Gods children will eventually find healing and enjoy unending peace.
“Then someday, I will heal this place and my people as well, and let them enjoy unending peace.”
God‘s will, will prevail. His timing is perfect and in the waiting we need to draw close to him for earthly peace and restoration. My friend Nicole mention the song below this morning and how it was a timely message for today’s message. Enjoy!
