Hebrews 8

The High Priest of a New Covenant

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[a] But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediatoris superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said[b]:

“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant
I made with their ancestors
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.”[c]

13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Hebrews 8

Would you like to update now?
We see that on our phones, laptops, computers, TVs, we even get correspondence in the mail asking us if we want to update policies… plans etc. We get comfortable with the old though right? We will hit that ‘not now, later’ button Or tear up that invitation in the mail to update your policy. The unknown can be scary at times because it’s unchartered waters… We don’t know what to expect because everything is probably going to change. Pastor Shawn told us this morning, “You don’t promise something new unless there’s something lacking with the old one.”

When you read the list of improvements on the update it promises you better security, speed, and access.  Jewish Christians struggled when they were trying to understand the relationship between the free gift of salvation from God and the Mosaic law of the old covenant. The author is explaining in this chapter what this ‘update’ means and replaces and how Jesus was superior to the law of Moses.

There is no earthly priest that can take away sin, that’s why we needed Jesus to fix a broken connection. Jesus, the perfect High Priest, became the mediator and brought a better connection to God.
One of Grace and not of works.
It is a covenant marked by believing and receiving instead of earning and deserving.

With the new covenant God doesn’t just forgive, he forgets, he erases the board just like erasing a hard drive and destroying the evidence. He doesn’t remember but we sure do right? We dredge up all those past sins and doubt … can he really forgive me for doing this, can he really forgive a person that does that?

Sins from the past.. ghosts that haunt us. Sometimes when my brain dredges up the old me One by one I thank him for forgiving the stumbles of yesterday.

Do you think God was exaggerating when he said he would cast our sins as far as the east is from the west? He who is perfect love cannot hold grudges… if He does then it is not perfect love! The new covenant allows us to renew, refresh and face each day with security because of His blood that was shed for our forgiveness.

‘ Would you like to update now?’
YES! and Amen
