Leviticus 21

Rules for Priests

21 The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: ‘A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean for any of his people who die, except for a close relative, such as his mother or father, his son or daughter, his brother, or an unmarried sister who is dependent on him since she has no husband—for her he may make himself unclean. He must not make himself unclean for people related to him by marriage,[a]and so defile himself.

“‘Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beardsor cut their bodies. They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the food offerings to the Lord, the food of their God, they are to be holy.

“‘They must not marry women defiled by prostitution or divorced from their husbands, because priests are holy to their God. Regard them as holy, because they offer up the food of your God. Consider them holy, because I the Lord am holy—I who make you holy.

“‘If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire.

10 “‘The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt[b] or tear his clothes. 11 He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother, 12 nor leave the sanctuary of his God or desecrate it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oilof his God. I am the Lord.

13 “‘The woman he marries must be a virgin. 14 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people, 15 so that he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the Lord, who makes him holy.’”

16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 “Say to Aaron: ‘For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, 20 or who is a hunchback or a dwarf, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the food offerings to the Lord. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God. 22 He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food; 23 yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.’”

24 So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.

Leviticus 21

God gave specific instructions to Aaron and his sons about priestly moral conduct. They had a special responsibility not only to God but to the people before God. They must be holy and pure. I find it interesting that clearly priests were married because when God gave instruction about participating in funerals he mentioned the immediate family: also son, daughter being an exception to them touching the dead. In Ezekiel 24:16-17 we see him mourn for his wife… clearly a priest that was married.

God wants priests to be holy and display that holiness to the people. Right … it’s tough to listen to somebody preaching when you know what’s going on during the week outside of church in their day to day life. So here’s the kicker guys, when you start that relationship with Jesus Christ we become priests, disciples of God to spread the word and tell others about his love and grace. We also need to live a Godly life and are held accountable like priests.

Pastor Harry told us this morning “Righteousness is a lifestyle. Holiness is a state of being, it’s who you are. God looks at us and says you are holy, set apart and this lifestyle comes with changes. It’s a process of becoming more like Jesus as the Holy Spirit will guides you. We need to fill the heart of God like he fills ours.., don’t forget where you came from. Acknowledge him in All things because he brought us out of the trenches. But when that happens God starts to prune things in our life that are not pleasing to him. Pastor Harry asked us, “what is God pruning in your life?”

As we walk together with the Holy Spirit how are we influencing the people around us. Are you living a life of integrity? Are you making room for God? If you don’t he will make room for you. 🙃 We are living testimonies.

“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭2‬-‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus is our high priest now. (Heb 4:14) As we see Leviticus unfold God’s plan for redemption was revealed through the Messiah, he was the ultimate sacrifice. No longer do we need goats and bulls but by Jesus blood we would be saved. No need for scapegoats Jesus was the scapegoat for all of our sins. He is our sacrifice and priest. He is anointed with the Holy Spirit pouring it out on his Church, you and me.
(1 Peter 2:9)

Here we see the churches relationship as a holy priest … we are worthy! (Rev 5:9-10) Believer’s united to Christ sharing the gospel. Sharing all He does and all that He is. We rest in the finished work of Christ. Acknowledge His name.. our blessing? We don’t need anyone to bring us into the presence of God.(Angels, archangels, bishops, archbishops, priests) We now have a union, communion and fellowship with God because our great high priest is Jesus Christ. His last breath tore away the veil that shrouded the holy of holies. Christ work gave us immediate access to God who is in the heavenly holy of holies. We have the right and authority to read, interpret and apply the teachings in the Bible. Every person who believes in Christ shares in this priestly office and we are held to a higher standard. The Holy Spirit uniquely gifting us to equip others with our stories.

Our stories! One after another… each building a foundation, molding us into who God calls us to be. As we learn through each and every circumstance, victory and trial allowing God‘s wisdom and discernment to guide us along the way! 🙌
