Genesis 35

Jacob Returns to Bethel

Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”

So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.

Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan. There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel,[a]because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth.[b]

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[c] God appeared to him again and blessed him. 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[e]” So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[f]; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants. 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.”13 Then God went up from him at the place where he had talked with him.

14 Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. 15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.[g]

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac

16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.” 18 As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.[h] But his father named him Benjamin.[i]

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).20 Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.

21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder. 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

23 The sons of Leah:

Reuben the firstborn of Jacob,

Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.

24 The sons of Rachel:

Joseph and Benjamin.

25 The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:

Dan and Naphtali.

26 The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah:

Gad and Asher.

These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. 28 Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years. 29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Genesis 35

Well after all the drama Jacob‘s kids got him into last Friday he’s in a tough spot. His whole family is in danger because of his sons revenge for the rape of Dinah. Jacob needs God‘s help. God shows mercy on Jacob and tells him again… “go to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar….” God always gives us a way out when we are backed into a corner. The way out looks different for each of us and our situations, but we need to be willing to move, get help, change plans, make new friends etc. and repent for what we’ve done. It certainly isn’t easy but it will be worth it.
Jacob told his families to do three things:
1) Put away all the foreign gods/idols.
Jacob had to go to his family and tell them to give up all the idols. The idols Rachel stole from her father and all the stuff they just stole from the town that they plundered.. Get rid of it! Remove anything that will stand in the way between God and us. Completely surrendering it all.
2) Purify yourselves.
God had to remind Jacob he was a new man, ‘Israel’. Act like it! Give up all ‘that junk in the trunk’ (as a Pastor Brendon reminds us) and allow me, God, to guide you and please try to be obedient this time. He was sending him back to Bethel with a new sense of purpose. Be fruitful and multiply.
3) Change your clothes!
Get yourself cleaned up and be ready for this new mission that I’m placing before you. God invites us to change our circumstances and our hearts. How we respond… Well that’s up to us. The process of removing our sin and changing the situation that we are in. Changing our clothes, our attitude and our hearts. Putting our game face on. Papa H said this morning, “when we go before the Lord we have to keep ourselves in check”. Examining ourselves and making ourselves right before the Lord. Repenting of anything that’s in the way and accepting the challenge that he’s placing before us. When he calls you to do something, do it. We can’t look at our to do list and say oh wait a minute God you’re not on my list today… I can schedule you in on Thursday is that ok?  Guys Thursday may never come! That person or opportunity might be gone by then. A few minutes of God time might change everything for that situation or other person that God has brought you to. Don’t ignore God when he calls you to do something. You definitely will miss out on a blessing.
We get ourselves into situations, messy ones sometimes. Get rid of the obstacles, purify yourself by repenting, and change your clothes. Come back to the game all cleaned up with God at your side.
If he has called you to it he will protect you and get you through it! Look at verse 5. “God caused the people in the nearby cities to be afraid so they did not follow them.” Gods waiting, placing his protection around you and he saying let’s do this.. together this time. When you get to the place God has directed you to … praise him, thank him, Give God all the glory and worship him.
What situation do you need help with today?
Allow God to help you.

May be an image of sky and text that says 'THEN GOD GOD SAID TO JACOB, "Go UP TO BETHEL AND SETTLE THERE, AND BUILD ΑΝ ALTAR THERE TO GOD, WHO APPEARED TO YOU WHEN YOU WERE FLEEING FROM YOUR BROTHER ESAU." So JACOB SAID TO HIS HOUSEHOLD AND TO ALL WHO WERE WITH HIM, "GET RID OF THE FOREIGN GODS YOU HAVE WITH YOU, AND PURIFY YOURSELVES AND CHANGE YOUR CLOTHES. GENESIS 35:1-2'
