Exodus 15

The Song of Moses and Miriam

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

“I will sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.

“The Lord is my strength and my defense[a];
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
The Lord is a warrior;
the Lord is his name.
Pharaoh’s chariots and his army
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh’s officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.[b]
The deep waters have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.
Your right hand, Lord,
was majestic in power.
Your right hand, Lord,
shattered the enemy.

“In the greatness of your majesty
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;
it consumed them like stubble.
By the blast of your nostrils
the waters piled up.
The surging waters stood up like a wall;
the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
The enemy boasted,
‘I will pursue, I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;
I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.’
10 But you blew with your breath,
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.
11 Who among the gods
is like you, Lord?
Who is like you—
majestic in holiness,
awesome in glory,
working wonders?

12 “You stretch out your right hand,
and the earth swallows your enemies.
13 In your unfailing love you will lead
the people you have redeemed.
In your strength you will guide them
to your holy dwelling.
14 The nations will hear and tremble;
anguish will grip the people of Philistia.
15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified,
the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling,
the people[c] of Canaan will melt away;
16 terror and dread will fall on them.
By the power of your arm
they will be as still as a stone—
until your people pass by, Lord,
until the people you bought[d] pass by.
17 You will bring them in and plant them
on the mountain of your inheritance—
the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling,
the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.

18 “The Lord reigns
for ever and ever.”

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen[e] went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. 21 Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.”

The Waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[f]) 24 So the people grumbledagainst Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”

25 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.

Exodus 15

The song of Moses. As Moses lead the Israelites into the desert they worshiped the Lord and sang this song. A spontaneous song that comes from the heart when the power and presence of God was real to them. That’s the one thing about worship, when are singing.. we are singing to God… Not to an audience, the people around us but to the Almighty God. Building Him up, thanking Him, proclaiming His superiority, reassuring Him that we know He’s got us. As we sing our spirits are lifted and our faith is strengthened in the power of God. We can trust him in every circumstance. Papa H saying this morning, “He’s already in our tomorrow … have faith!”

This was a great victory to Israel. They knew that other nations would hear of this victory and fear them because the Lord was on their side in this battle. You can’t make something like this up. This battle was the Lords from the very beginning, he knew it was coming and had it all planned out. He had their back, he had them protected and covered and was in control the whole time. God is already in our tomorrows!

The Israelites were joyous lifting up God in song and praise but how quick they were to forget and complain. That’s us right? Three days in Moses and the Israelites are in the desert with no water. I don’t know about you but I’m thinking Moses it’s time to use that staff again and tap on something and get some water, but instead Moses cries out to God because the people are grumbling “what will we drink?” The Lord directs him to a tree and Moses throws it into the water so that it becomes drinkable. Moses always going to God first. ‘All right God, what are we doing next?’ He doesn’t take the situation into his own hands, he doesn’t use his walking stick to stir the water … he goes to God first and says tell me what to do.

Now the water is ready and the Lord gives them some rules to live by to test their loyalty. As long as you obey and keep the rules I’m not gonna bring any sickness on you like the I did to the Egyptian‘s. I am the one who heals you. You see this water needed that broken limb with its sap and mineral content to not only make the water drinkable and unbitter but it added magnesium and calcium. Yeah you guessed it, it has a laxative effect on them and cleans out their digestive systems. Cleansing them of the elements the Egyptians suffered from that made them sick Magnesium and calcium are important elements that together form a basis of a drug called dolomite. It’s used by athletes as a performance enhancer in hot weather conditions. God provided the right medicine to both clean out their systems and prepare them for a hot walk in the desert.

Amazing how God works! He is in our tomorrow’s, knows what we’re gonna face and what we need to sustain us. Yes and amen!

So what’s your go to worship song? When you’re in the midst of it, what do you listen to? My go to song is ‘Every Victory’ by Danny Gokey
