Exodus 24

The Covenant Confirmed

24 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron,Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance, but Moses alone is to approach the Lord; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him.”

When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, “Everything the Lord has said we will do.”Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said.

He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offeringsand sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the Lord. Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed against the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, “We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”

Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”

13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God. 14 He said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a disputecan go to them.”

15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fireon top of the mountain. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Exodus 24

The mosaic covenant is made. Moses relays all the words of the Lord as God spoke to him alone in chapters 20 through 23. Now special access has been allowed so that others can go up to the mountain with Moses. They will worship him from afar as God allows the elders to see him so they will believe the reality of His presence. Now they will be more likely to trust Him.

Four things we learned from this chapter:
1) Write the law down.
When God spoke to Moses he said write down my words so you remember them. When we have a revelation from God and are talking to him, reading his word… write down things that stand out to you and speak to you so that you remember them and carry them with you.
2) Make a sacrifice.
Admitting our sin and falling before God addressing the need for a substitute so we can bring ourselves to the feet of God. Worshiping him.
3) Hear God‘s word and respond.
This covenant is based on His words not ours. God doesn’t negotiate but he also does not force his word on us. We are free to read, hear and respond.
4) The covenant was made with the application of blood.
Receiving this blood the covenant is sealed. That’s why we do communion. Blood runs through our bodies to help keep us alive.. the outpouring of life. One life, Jesus Christ, being given for another.
“For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26:28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

God allowed the elders to see him so they would believe but how can we see God? If we know Jesus we can know God. The more we know the story and the life that Jesus lead the more we get to know God. Moses went up that mountain to receive the tablets of the 10 Commandments. God invited him. Just like he invites each and everyone of us to get to know him. That invitation to start that relationship. When Moses went up that mountain he took Joshua with him who stayed at a distance. This was Joshua‘s first job as Moses assistant. Later we will see that Joshua becomes a great leader. But Moses responded and said yes to God… he went up that mountain, he accepted the invitation. Yes it was a scary scene. The clouds, the smoke, the fire… Yet God revealed His glory to Moses as Moses trusted him. Pastor Sean said we have to go up the mountain to draw close to God and in that place revelation will come. God says draw near. I will keep you safe and reveal myself to you. If you draw close to me I will draw close to you.

Will you go up the mountain today? He’s waiting.
