Day 17 – Love or Selfishness
Give and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over shall be given into your bosom. For with what measure you give to others, it shall be measured to you again. – (Luke 6:38)
I remember being asked what is the opposite of love, and my reply was, “hate.” The person asking me this question told me I was wrong and then said that the opposite of Love is selfishness. It took me some time to process this truth, but after studying the scriptures it became very clear that love always gives and selfishness always takes.
The life of Jesus is the greatest example of love the world has ever seen, and He gave until it cost Him His life. I believe the Lord is calling you today out of selfishness and into a glorious dimension of giving. Will you answer the call?
There are many Christians that give with selfish motives and they never see the manifestation of Luke 6:38 in their lives. We must never give to get something in return; it’s not the heart God wants us to have. But we must give cheerfully and sacrificially. I love David’s heart in 1 Chronicle 21:24, “I will not take what is yours and give it to the Lord. I will not present burnt offerings that have cost me nothing!”
Wow! Every time I read that scripture something happens to my heart, it reveals the selfishness in me and reminds me how I need to give no matter how bad it hurts. Giving consists of time, talents, money and resources. It’s giving your life so others can be blessed. Today allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into blessing someone so Jesus can be seen in your life.
Confession: I am called to love so I can bless others.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me be a cheerful giver and to give sacrificially.
