The purpose of Baby Dedication is for a parent to dedicate an infant to God by committing themselves to raising the child in the training and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4) as well as to welcome the baby into the church. It specifically does not include baptizing the baby with water. We do believe in performing water baptisms as described in the Bible as an event to be undertaken by someone who is a believer and follower of Christ and is able to make the choice to be baptized; which an infant is not yet able to do. We believe that a child aged 6 may be ready to decide if they wish to be baptized, and consequently the oldest children we would include in a baby dedication would be 5 years old. (1 Samuel 1:11, 26–28).
Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.”
And she said, “O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.” So they worshiped the Lord there.
